In the last lesson we learned the names of a number of countries (kuni). Since Japanese is a very regular and logical language it is quite easy to convert the name of the kuni くに into the name of the people who live there. All you do is add jin (person or people) to the country name. The kuni くに Japan is nihon にほん, so the nationality (kokuseki) is nihonjin にほんじん (literally “Japan person” ).
The same method is used to make the language (kotoba) of the kuni くに. Just add go ご (which means “language”) to the name of the kuni くに. So if the kuni くに is China (chuugoku), the kotoba ことば is chuugokugo ちゆうごくご (Chinese language). |
